Hexagon came together over many recording sessions in Chicago and LA. We were still touring on the The Nerve, but we’d have a week off, sometimes two weeks, so we’d go into the studio and track a couple of songs. We’ve never done a piecemeal record before–everything was always in intense, non-stop sessions ’til the record was finished–so it was an experiment in patience. It ended up being a cool way to do a record. We did the bulk of it with Greg Norman (a recording wizard) at Chicago’s Electrical Audio, owned by Steve Albini; we also did some tracking in Los Angeles with Shawn Dealey, sound engineer for Counting Crows. Says Casey, “when I listen back to it now, I am reminded of all the music we’d been listening to over the past two years–and all the memories that music evokes, like the Outlaw Roadshow or touring England for the first time. It’s a yearbook album for me, rather than a snapshot.”
