‘The City Tree’ was recorded in the summer of 2007 at Gravity Studios. Johnny had just graduated from high school and was about to join the rest of the band in college out east. Some of the lyrics on the album- Cherrystone Creek for instance- were about that transitional period and a reflection on childhood. During the 2006-2007 school year we were all scattered across the country. Casey was in New York, Pete and Teddy were in New Hampshire, and Johnny was in Chicago. Because we were all in different parts of the country, many of the songs on this record were written by sharing files over the Internet. One of us would record a song idea on our laptops using the earliest version of Apple’s Garage Band and then send it to the others. We’d download the file, put some headphones on, and come up with ideas for our own parts. Then, we’d get back together over vacations and develop our collective ideas into a song. We were all studying music in college: Casey was taking jazz lessons, Pete was in a contemporary music lab and world percussion ensemble, Teddy was signing in the gospel choir, and Johnny was studying guitar. All of these musically diverse studies found their way onto the record. The result was an album, which drew from many genres and styles.
