‘Succession, I Guess’ was the first album we recorded at Gravity Studios in Chicago. Before we went to Gravity, we had mostly recorded our music in our basement. We printed the CD artwork on labels from office supply stores and burned copies of the album ourselves. Going to Gravity, a legendary recording studio in Chicago, was really intimidating for us. But it was a great experience for us and produced a record that we are very proud of. The record was written in three weeks, after Casey, Pete and Teddy returned from their freshmen year in college. The writing process for this album was very hectic, because we had such a short time together before we headed into record. The night before we were heading into the studio for tracking, all we had for ‘Purple Gum Weather’ was a melody on the guitar. We composed the entire song in about 15 minutes. Pete had been playing with a world percussion ensemble at the time, so he played some Djembe (a west African hand drum) in the introduction.
